When a gas fireplace clicks but won't light

The igniter ticks. Nothing catches. Nine times out of ten it is the pilot assembly, not the valve. Spider webbing plugs the pilot orifice; the odorant in the gas draws those insects in, and long idle summers here make it worse. Other times the thermocouple has aged out. A millivolt meter settles that question in minutes. A thermopile reading low under load will drop the main burner mid-evening. That is the classic "it lights, then quits" call.

Electronic ignition units fail differently. IPI modules run off battery packs, and dead cells mimic a dead valve. Remote receivers lose their pairing. Wall-switch wire corrodes inside a damp firebox.

Log sets retrofitted into old masonry boxes carry their own list. Pre-1980 ranch and bungalow stock here is full of them. The throat damper has to be clamped open, permanently. Crown condition and flue tile joints overhead still matter. A flue idle since last winter can hold a nest. We check the vent path and test for CO before calling it done.

Sealed direct-vent inserts are a separate animal: gasketed glass, coaxial pipe. The terminal must stay clear. Soot on the glass usually traces to log placement or a starved burner.
