The pilot lights, holds a few seconds, then drops out. Or the flame turns orange and lazy, soot climbs the back of the glass, and a gray film won't wipe off. Half the burner lights and half stays dark. These are maintenance faults far more often than a dead gas valve.

A standing pilot keeps the valve open by heating a thermocouple or thermopile. Dust, carbon and pet hair coat that probe and the output falls off. Burner ports clog the same way. Spiders nest in the orifice over a long idle summer. The fix is mechanical. Pull the log set, vacuum the pan, brush the ports, clean the pilot hood, reseat the logs to the manufacturer's diagram. Misplaced logs cause most sooting.

Plenty of local gas log sets were retrofitted into pre-1980 masonry fireboxes. Those need a clamped damper. Check the clay tile mortar joints too. A CO check at the hearth matters as well. Old unreinforced brick stacks around here still carry seismic cracking from 1971 Sylmar and 1994 Northridge. A cracked flue beside a gas appliance is a combustion gas path.

Sealed direct-vent inserts are different. The glass gasket is a safety barrier, not a window. Warped refractory panels and burned-out liners void the UL listing. Those get replaced off-site, not cleaned.
