What an insert retrofit actually involves in Simi Valley

Much of the older ranch and bungalow stock here has an open masonry firebox with a clay tile flue. Those boxes were built for draft, not heat output. Before anything is ordered, the firebox gets measured at the back wall, not the front opening. Masonry tapers, and inserts fail to fit for that reason constantly. Unreinforced brick stacks still carrying unaddressed cracking from the 1971 Sylmar and 1994 Northridge events get repaired first. An insert does not hold a damaged stack together.

A wood or pellet insert needs a continuous stainless liner running to the top of the flue, insulated, connected directly to the appliance collar. Not a short connector stub. The rusted throat damper is usually cut out to pass the liner. A block-off plate seals the old throat so room air stops escaping. Hearth extension and side clearances follow the appliance listing, not habit.

Sealed direct-vent gas inserts going into those same old boxes use co-linear flex vent and a new cap. The blower wants an outlet inside the firebox, which pre-1980 masonry almost never has. Gas supply needs an accessible shutoff. A CO reading is taken after burn-in.

The 1980s-and-later tracts are different. Prefab metal fireboxes with warped refractory panels will not legally accept an insert. That's a firebox replacement discussion instead. Chase cover, storm collar and spark arrestor screening get checked on the same roof trip.
